Chapter 11

Bald and Balding must have been able to read what my initial thought was from my very unimpressed expression.

“We weren’t too thrilled when The Boss said to find you again, either,” Balding said. “I still can’t smell properly.”

He took the bottle of vodka from my hands and glanced over it.

“This stuff tastes like wallpaper remover,” he said. “But I’m not surprised to see you have questionable taste.”

“What does The Boss want now?” I asked. “He said I had two weeks before…”

They might not have known about the deal, so I decided to keep that piece of information to myself for now.

“Come with us, and you can hear it from him,” Balding said.

“Okay.” I looked down the aisle to see if Hellena was back from the bathroom, but she wasn’t anywhere to be seen.

“Don’t make this into a repeat of last time, just come with us or…” Balding stared at me like I’d just turned blue in front of his eyes. “Okay? You mean you’re just going to come with us?”

“Yes, I’m going to come with you,” I said. “But let me make a phone call first.”

Balding and Bald looked at each other with more confusion than a toddler who was learning to count.

“Okay… good,” Balding said, but his voice was slathered in doubt. “Make your call, and then we can go.”

I dialed Quinn, and he answered after the third ring.

“What did I say about having her home before midnight?” Quinn laughed into the phone. “You’re grounded, young man.”

“I’m going to need you to come to the store and walk Hellena home,” I said. “Something’s come up.”

I hung up before Quinn could ask any questions that I wouldn’t be able to answer in front of Bald and Balding. Just as I put my phone back into my pocket, Hellena waddled her way down the aisle.

“Did you make some new friends while I was gone?” she asked me.

“I’m sorry, Hellena, but I have to go. Quinn will meet you here soon to escort you back in the dark.” I smiled apologetically.

Before she could ask any more questions, I left the store with Bald and Balding close behind me.

“Did you pick a bottle out at least?” Hellena shouted as I left, but I didn’t answer.

In the parking lot, Bald and Balding showed me to their car, and I got into the back without a fuss.

Aside from being too tired to fight, I knew it wouldn’t be wise to try and evade The Boss after he’d agreed to a deal with me. I was lucky enough that he was willing to give me another chance and didn’t want to screw myself over by lashing out.

The Ark Hotel was less busy at night. Only a few people were in the lobby area including the staff. There was a different woman behind the desk, and she was just as artificially friendly as the last woman.

At least the elevators in The Boss’ den were more reassuring to ride in, unlike the ones from Quinn’s building. The
